Steps:

Equipped with a thermometer, a stirrer, a reflux condenser, 2000 ml four-necked flask was added p-nitro-o-toluidine 30.4g (0.2mol) and 900ml of water and 100g of sodium hydroxide was heated to reflux and held for 50 hours after heating was stopped, Add 500ml of water, Filtered and the filtrate was slowly added hydrochloric acid to adjust the pH of the reaction solution to about 3, Filter the Precipitated yellow solid after cooling to room temperature. 1000ml water was used to wash the filtr cake. It was washed three times and drained. It was then dried for 4 hours at 50°C using Vacuum drying oven to give a yellow nitro-o-cresol solid, yield 98.5%.
