A suspension of 2-(4-iodo-2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)ethan-1-amine (1 g, 3.25 mmol, 1 eq) and phthalic anhydride (0.53 g, 3.58 mmol, 1.1 eq) in 3 mL DMF was heated to reflux overnight. After the reaction was completed as confirmed by TLC, 30 mL water was added and a white solid formed. The solid was filtered and washed with EtOH (5 mL x 3) and petroleum ether (5 mL x 3) to afford the title compound (lg, 64%) as a white solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO) d 7.83 (d, J = 1.2 Hz, 5H), 7.19 (s, 1H), 6.77 (s, 1H), 3.81 (t, 2H), 3.61 (s, 3H), 3.54 (s, 3H), 2.87 (t, 2H).
