Steps:
Preparation of 1-fluoro-4-(methylsulfonyl)-2-nitrobenzene; A mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid (16.0 ml, 290 mmole) and fuming nitric acid (8.0 ml, 176.4 mmole) was treated in small portions with 1-Fluoro-4-methanesulfonyl- benzene (5.0Og, 28.7 mmole) and stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction was poured carefully into crushed ice (14Og) forming a precipitate. The solid was collected by filtration and the solid was washed with water. A white solid was collected after drying in a vacuum oven (5.94g, 94%). Experimental Data; LCMS 50% H2O, Retention time 1.08 min., C7H6FNO4S, MW 219.2; Found APCI' 219.2(M+); 1H NMR (CDCI3) δ 8.65-8.63 (m, 1H), 8.22-8.18 (m, 1H), 7.53-7.43 (m, 1H), 3.10 (s, 3H).
