A saturated aqueous solution of sodium hydrogencarbonate (100 ml) and hydrochloric acid salt of diethyl 2-aminomalonate (10.0 g; 47.3 mmol) were added to dichloromethane (100 ml) and stirred. The aqueous layer was extracted with dichloromethane and the organic phase was washed with brine. The organic phase was separated and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. After filtration, the filtrate was collected and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure to give diethyl 2-aminomalonate [3] (8.16 g; 46.6 mmol; yield 99%) as a colorless oil. 1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 4.31 (5H, m), 1.89 (3H, s), 1.31-1.26 (6H, m)
