Reaction procedure for the synthesis of 2H-acenaphthylen-1-one (3)
In a round bottomed flask the 340 mg of compound 2 (2 mmol) was dissolved in 10 mL diethylether and then cooled to 0 °C. Then the acidic dichromate solution (prepared by mixing 1gm of K2Cr2O7, 0.4 mL H2SO4 and 4 mL of water) was added drop wise for a period of 10 min. The reaction mixture was stirred for additional 30 min at 0 °C. After completion of the reaction, mixture was diluted with saturated solution of Na2CO3 and extracted with ether (20 mL x 3) and the combined organic layer was washed with saturated sodium chloride solution, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, and evaporated. The crude product was then purified by column chromatography using silica gel 60-120 mesh and petroleum ether / ethyl acetate (95:5) as eluent. White solid product was obtained in 97% yield.
