Comparison of isoparaffins & normal alkanes
Comparing to normal alkanes, isoparaffins are with so many advantages:
1. Lower cloud point: Cloud point is the highest temperature at which the oil product becomes turbid under the test conditions when hydrocarbon microcrystals or water mist begin to appear. High cloud point will make product application limited at low temperatures.
2. Lower melting point and boiling point: For alkanes with the same molecular weight, normal alkanes have a higher melting point than isoalkanes. High symmetry alkanes are with higher melting point than those with low symmetry. A short main chain alkanes isomer is with more branches, and more branches make molecules getting closer, which bring a lower boiling point and melting point.
3. Lower freezing point: it can be used as a lubricant for various instruments under low temperature.
4. Lower toxicity: Compared with the toxicity of normal alkanes, isoparaffins are less toxic, and can be used in personal care products and household care products, and in the procseeing of metal utensils in direct contact with food.
5. Better stability: the thermal oxidation stability of normal alkanes is poor, and at high temperature, it will produce peroxides.
6. Better solubility: KB value is an indicator of the relative solubility of hydrocarbon solvents and measures the ability of petroleum solvents to dissolve resin in coatings. The higher KB value means the solvent's ability to dissolve the resin is better. The KB value of isoparaffins is 23-30, while the KB value of normal alkanes is 20-23.
7. More safe and green: Isoparaffins are with low surface tension, and strong cohesion, which is supportive for recycle and reuse.
8. Better ductility: Isoparaffins' multi-branched structure leads to small intermolecular forces, and ductility is better than normal alkanes.
