Blue-green algae, the older name for cyanobacteria, is a heterogeneous group of photosynthetic nitrogen fvting organisms. It contains chlorophyll-a, and is used as a biofertilizer for wetland rice. The color of the algae is due to the presence of the photosynthetic pigment phycocyanin.
