A macrocycIic peptide alkaloid, aphelandrine occurs in the extract of Aphelandra squarrosa Nees. It forms colourless plates when crystallized from MeOH or needles from MeOH aq. The base is dextrorotatory with a specific rotation of [α]D +230°(MeOH) and gives an ultraviolet spectrum in EtOH with absorption maxima at 228, 283 and a shoulder at 277 nm.
