ChEBI:Sulfacetamide sodium is an organic sodium salt that is the monohydrate form of sulfacetamide sodium. It has a role as an antimicrobial agent, an antiinfective agent and an EC 2.5.1.15 (dihydropteroate synthase) inhibitor. It is an organic sodium salt and a hydrate. It contains a member of sulfacetamide sodium anhydrous. | [General Description]
N-Sulfanilylacetamide monosodium salt (Sodium Sulamyd)is obtained as the monohydrate and is a white, odorless, bitter, crystalline powder that is very soluble (1:2.5) in water.Because the sodium salt is highly soluble at the physiologicalpH of 7.4, it is especially suited, as a solution, forrepeated topical applications in the local management ofophthalmic infections susceptible to sulfonamide therapy. | [Biochem/physiol Actions]
Sulfacetamide is a sulfonamide antibiotic that blocks the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by inhibiting the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase. Sulfacetamide is a competitive inhibitor of bacterial para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which is required for bacterial synthesis of folic acid. It is active against Gram positive bacteria, Gram negative bacteria and Chlamydia. Mode of resistance is via the alteration of dihydropteroate synthase or alternative pathway for folic acid synthesis. | [storage]
Store at -20°C |
