81.1 Step 1 Phenyl (pyridin-3-yl) methanol
A mixture of phenyl (pyridin-3-yl) methanone (2.0 g, 11 mmol) and sodium borohydride (623 mg, 16 mmol) in EtOH (30 mL) was stirred at 25 for 2 h. The mixture was then concentrated, diluted with water (20 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (20 mL × 3) . The combined organic layers were washed with brine (20 mL) , dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to give the desired product (2.0 g, 100) as yellow oil. LCMS (ESI) : m/z 184.3 [M+H]+.
