Steps:
I. Preparation and characterization of imine substrates
General procedure: A flame-dried round-bottom flask, equipped with a stir bar, was charged with benzhydrylamine (1.2 equiv), aldehyde (1.0 equiv), magnesium sulfate (0.40 g/mmol), and dichloromethane (2.0 mL/mmol). The mixture was allowed to stir at room temperature for 6-18 h under nitrogen atmosphere. Upon completion, the reaction mixture was filtered and concentrated. The resulting solid was purified by recrystallization (ethyl acetate/hexanes). 1a: white solid (98%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.41 (s, 1H), 7.85 - 7.77 (m, 2H), 7.42 - 7.17 (m, 13H), 5.58 (s, 1H).
