To a mixture of 4-methoxybenzaldehyde (3 g, 22.05 mmol) and cyclopentanamine (2.06 g, 24.26 mmol) in EtOH (100 mL) was added sodium borohydride (1.25 g, 33.08 mmol) carefully. The reaction was stirred for 16 h at 20 . Then the reaction was quenched by sat. NH4Cl solution (10 mL) , filtered and the filtrate was concentrated. The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography (120 g, DCM/MeOH =20: 1) to give N- [ (4-methoxyphenyl) methyl] cyclopentanamine (3 g, 39.8%yield) as a white solid. Mass Spectrum (ESI) m/z = 206.0 (M+1) .
