Steps:

98.2 Step 2: Ethyl 2-phenyl- 1 H-imidazole-5-carboxylate

A mixture of 2-phenyl-4H-oxazol-5-one (1.0 g, 6.21 mmol), ethyl cyanoformate (676 mg, 6.83 mmol, 669 iL) and tributylphosphine (753 mg, 3.72 mmol, 918 iL) in dichloromethane (3 mL) was degassed and purged with nitrogen 3 times, and then the mixture was stirred at 20 °C for 6h under a nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction mixture was quenched by addition of water (3 mL), then extracted with dichloromethane (1 0 mL x 2). The combined organic phases were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate,filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give a residue that was purified by chromatography (silica, petroleum ether / ethyl acetate 2:1) to give ethyl 2-phenyl-1 H-imidazole-5-carboxylate (480 mg, 2.22 mmol, 36 %) as a white solid.
