Synthesis of (S)-2-amino-3,3-d9-dimethylbutanamide (XXIIc, R2/3 = C(CD3)3).; A mixture of compound XXIIb (R2 = R3 = C(CD3)3) (71.0 g, 282.7 mmol), 10% Pd/C (~50% water, 20 g) and acetic acid (50 mL) in ethanol (1.2 L) was subjected to hydrogenation at 30 psi at rt for several days until LCMS showed that the reaction was complete. The mixture was filtered through Celite and washed with EtOAc. After the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo, the residue was diluted with water (1L) and basified with 1M NaOH solution to pH = 9. The mixture was extracted with dichloromethane and the aqueous layer was concentrated in vacuo to half volume, saturated with solid NaCl, and extracted with THF. The combined extracts were dried, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was chased with toluene to remove remaining water, followed by trituration with dichloromethane to afford the desired compound XXIIc (R2 = R3 = C(CD3)3) (38.0 g. 96% yield) as a white solid
