EXAMPLE V 5-Amino-2-methylthio-pyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid 131.4 g of 5-bromo-2-methylthio-pyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid, 860 ml of concentrated aqueous ammonia and 2.42 g of copper(II) sulphate, dissolved in 34 ml of water, are shaken in a bomb tube at 95° C. for 4 hours. After cooling, the precipitate is filtered off with suction. The precipitate is dissolved in 600 ml of hot water and the solution is filtered over active charcoal. The filtrate is cooled in an ice bath and brought to a pH of 3 with concentrated hydrochloric acid. The precipitate is filtered off with suction and purified by dissolving in dilute sodium hydroxide solution and precipitating with hydrochloric acid. Yield: 54.6 g (56% of theory), Melting point: 187° C. Rf value: 0.35 (silica gel; ethyl acetate/methanol=2:1)
