This compound was synthesized following the same general procedure as that for the preparation of 4-ethoxybenzyl chloride; thionyl chloride (6.36 g, 53.4 mmol), 4-octyloxybenzyl alcohol (12.4 g, 52.5 mmol), CH2Cl2 (150 mL). Oil, 13.1 g (97%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ=7.28 (d, 2H, J=6.6 Hz), 6.86 (d, 2H, J=6.6 Hz), 4.56 (s, 2H), 3.95 (t, 2H, J=6.3 Hz), 1.77 (m, 2H), 1.34 (m, 2H), 1.28 (m, 8H), 0.89 (t, 3H, J=6.9 Hz). 13C NMR (75 MHz, CDCl3) δ=159.5, 130.2, 129.7, 114.9, 68.3, 46.6, 32.0, 29.6, 29.4 (×2), 26.2, 22.9, 14.3.
