The mixture of 4-(methylamino)-3-nitrophenol (4.5 g, 28.644 mmol), CH3NH2 (13 mL) in NMP (30 mL) was stirred at 50 °C for 20 h. The resulting mixture was diluted with water, and then extracted with ethyl acetate (200 mL x 3). The combined organic layer was washed with brine (100 mL x 2), dried over Na2S04, and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel column to give 4-(methylamino)-3-nitrophenol (2.6 g, yield 54%). LCMS (m/z): 169.1 [M + H]+.
