Steps:

1.4 Preparation of 4-methyl -1H- imidazole-2-carboxylic acid (4)
At room temperature, a solution of 4-methyl -1H- imidazole-2-carboxylate (3, 77.0g, 0.5mol) in absolute ethanol (600mL) was added 250mL of aqueous sodium hydroxide (40%).The reaction was heated to 50oC and maintained 1h.Cooled to room temperature, neutralized with concentrated hydrochloric acid (37%) was acidified to pH = 6.The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, the residue was purified by column chromatography (methylene chloride / methanol = 10/1 as eluent) to give the title compound4(60.2g, 96%), as a white solid.
