2 General method for the synthesis of compounds (1a-d)
General procedure: A mixture of 5-methoxyisatin, (10mmol), 33% potassium hydroxide (10ml) in ethanol (20ml), and 4-substituted acetophenone (10mmol) was heated under reflux for 9-18h. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was diluted with water (50ml) and extracted with ether (3×50ml). The aqueous layer was neutralized with 1M hydrochloric acid. The precipitated solid was filtered, washed with water, dried and crystallized from ethanol.
