Add 8.45 g (40 mmol) of 3-nitrophthalic acid and 2.16 g (36 mmol) of urea into the flask, add 40 mL of glacial acetic acid as the reaction solvent, and stir at 117 °C for 3 h. After the reaction was completed, the mixture was cooled to room temperature. Concentrate under reduced pressure to obtain the crude product, and extract 3 times with water (15 mL) and ethyl acetate (15 mL) to remove residual urea. The organic phase was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain 7.53 g of yellow solid 3-nitrophthalimide with a yield of 98%.
