2) 4-Phenyl-2-methyl-5-thiazolecarboxylic acid A mixture of 4.00 g of compound B and 1.81 g of potassium hydroxide in 40 cc of ethanol and 10 cc of water was heated under reflux for 3 hours. After cooling, the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure and ice water was added to the residue, followed by washing with n-hexane. The aqueous layer was acidified with 1N HCl and the crystals thus precipitated were collected by filtration, washed with water, and then dried to obtain 3.53 g of 4-phenyl-2-methyl-5-thiazolecarboxylic acid. Yield: 99.3%.
