Steps:
General procedure for the preparation of 2-hydroxyarylketones from the reaction of 2-hydroxybenzaldehydes with aryl halides
General procedure: In a 50 mL round bottom flask equipped with a magnetic stirring bar, tetrabutylammonium bromide (0.5 mmol, 0.16 g) was added and heated at 100 °C to be melted. Then a mixture of PdCl2 (3 mol%, 0.0053 g), aqueous NaOH (2.0 mmol, 0.08 g of NaOH dissolved in 2 mL H2O), hydroxybenzaldehyde (1.0 mmol), and arylhalide (2.0 mmol) were added to molten tetrabutylammonium bromide. The progress of the reaction was monitored by TLC. After the appropriate reaction time, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and extracted with diethyl ether (3 × 5 mL). The organic layer was isolated and dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 and purified by column chromatography over silica gel using n-hexane/ethyl acetate as eluent to afford the highly pure desired products (Table 2).
