Steps:

20 2-Chloro-5-(chloromethyl)-3-methylpyridine (39)

To a solution of 38 (3.20 g, 18.3 mmol) in DCM (20 mL) was added SOCl₂ (10.9 g, 91.4 mmol) slowly at 0 °C.
The mixture was stirred at 0 °C under N₂ for 2 h.
The mixture was then treated with water (20 mL) and extracted with dichloromethane (50 mL x 3), and the combined organic layers were dried over Na₂SO₄ and concentrated.
The resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (petroleum ether/ethyl acetate = 2/1) to give the desired product (3.47 g, 100%) as a yellow oil. ¹H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl₃) δ 8.23 (s, 1H), 7.61 (s, 1H), 4.54 (s, 2H), 2.40 (s, 3H).
