Steps:
2-bromo-5-nitrobenzoic acid (4i1).
Commercially available 2-bromobenzoic acid (9.90 g, 49.3 mmol) was added to an ice cold mixture of 25 mL H2SO4 and 12 mL of HNO3. The reaction was stirred for 1 hr while keeping the temperature maintained below 5 °C. The reaction was poured into a 200 mL beaker containing ice water. The white solid product was obtained by vacuum filtering for 1 hr (11.6 g, 96%). mp = 180-181 °C. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 8.49 (d, J = 2.8 Hz, 1 H), 8.22 (dd, J = 8.8, 2.8 Hz, 1 H), 8.03 (d, J = 8.8 Hz, 1 H). The experimental m.p. matches the known m.p. (181°C).
