17.1 Step 1 :
To a solution of 2-amino-3-methylbenzoic acid (500 mg, 3.31 mmol) in DMF (33 ml.) was added N-bromosuccinimide (618 mg, 3.47 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h before being poured in water (50 ml.) and extracted with ethyl acetate (3 x 50 ml_). The combined organic phase was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under vacuum to give 2-amino-5- bromo-3-methyl-benzoic acid (760 mg, quantitative yield) as a brown solid. (1109) M/Z (M[⁷⁹Br]+H)⁺ = 230.0.
