Reaction Conditions:

A solution of ethyl 2-amino-2-ethylbutanoate (9.0256 g, 56.7 mmol), prepared in the previous step, in 150 mL of anhydrous diethyl ether was added under nitrogen to a suspension of lithium aluminum hydride (10.78 g, 284 mmol) in 300 mL of anhydrous diethyl ether. The addition was at a rate that maintained a gentle reflux (1.5 h). After the addition, the reaction was stirred at room temperature for 15 h. The reaction was cooled to ice-bath temperature. Water (14 mL) was added dropwise, followed by the dropwise addition of 14 mL of 15% NaOH and then 42 mL of water. The cooling bath was removed and the stirring continued for 2 h. The reaction was filtered and the solid rinsed with diethyl ether. The combined diethyl ether filtrates were dried (anhydrous MgSO4), filtered and the solvent removed under reduced pressure to give 2-amino-2-ethylbutan-1-ol (6.5330 g, 98%) as a yellow oil, MS (El) m/z 118.1233 [M+H]+.
