Dry THF (30mL) and chloro trimethyl silane (12.42mL, 98.24mmol) were added dropwise to L1BH4 (1.128g, 51.28mmol) over a period of 10 minutes under nitrogen atmosphere. This was followed by dropwise addition of 2-bromo-5-(2-nitro- vinyl)-thiophene (I- 14a: 3g, 12.82mmoi) in dry THF (30mL) over a period of 20 minutes and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 48 hours. The reaction was monitored by TLC (10% methanol in CHCI3). The reaction mixture was quenched with methanol and concentrated to afford 6.2g of the crude product which was used in the next step without further purification.1H NMR (DMSO-D6, 300 MHz): δ 9.0-8.5 (br s, 2H), 7.0 (d, 1H), 6.8 (d, 1H), 3.28-3.06 (m, 2H), 3.02-2.82 (m, 2H)
