[0263] Synthesis of l-(phenylsulfonyl)-lH-indole-2-carboxylic acid. To a solution of methyl l-(phenylsulfonyl)-lH-indole-2-carboxylate (473 mg, 1.5 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran/methanol/water (5:5: 1, l lmL) was added lithium hydroxide monohydrate (441 mg, 10.5 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 5 hours. After cooling to room temperature, it was concentrated, followed by addition of water (10 mL). The pH was adjusted to 2 with IN HC1 and extracted with ethyl acetate (15 mL x 3). The combined extraction was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated. The crude product was purified by re-crystallization in a mixture of dichloromethane and hexanes to afford 295 mg of the title compound as white solid.
