To a solution of N-methoxy-N-methylcyclobutanecarboxamide (20.0 g, 140 mmol, 1.00 eq ) in THF (100 mL) was added EtMgBr (3.00 M, 55.9 mL, 1.20 eq ) at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was stirred at RT for 2 h. The reaction was treated with sat. aqueous ammonium chloride and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were washed with water and brine, dried over NaiSCE, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 1- cyclobutylpropan-l-one (13.0 g, crude) as a light yellow liquid. NMR (400 MHz, CDCh): d: 3.29 - 3.22 (m, 1H), 2.40 - 2.33 (m, 2H), 2.22 - 2.11 (m, 4H), 2.04 - 1.94 (m, 2H), 1.04 (t, 7= 7.6Hz, 3H).
