To a vigorously stirred solution of concentrated HNO3 (5.0 mL) 4-bromoveratrole 4(500.0 mg, 2.3 mmol,1.0 equiv) was added dropwise at -8 to -4 cooled by anice-ethanol bath. After addition, the reaction mixture was stirred at -4 for 20.0min. The reaction mixture was diluted with cooled water (30.0 mL) and theprecipitated solid was collected by filtration under reduced pressure. The obtainedsolid was washed with water (15.0 mL × 3) and recrystallized in EtOH to affordcompound 5 (550.0 mg, 95% yield) in EtOH. 1H NMR (CDCl3): 7.57 (s, 1H),7.12 (s, 1H), 3.96 (s, 3H), 3.93 (s, 3H).
