Steps:
4 (0.200 g, 0.5 mmol) and bibenzyl (0.0935 g, 0.5 mmol), chosen as internal standard, were dissolved in 2 mL of dry dichloromethane. After few minutes 24 ml of boron tribromide (0.25 mmol, 0.5 equiv.) were charged into the Schlenk tube and the tube was sealed under argon with a rubber septum. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature. The GC-MS analysis of the samples withdrawn from the reaction mixture allowed to follow the disappearance of the dimethoxy substrate and the formation of the corresponding monodemethylated product, 2,5-diiodo-4-methoxy-phenol (5) as well as that of the fully dealkylated product, 1,4-dihydroxy-2,5-diiodo-benzene (3).
