2. General Procedure

General procedure: A 1,2-dichloroethane (2 mL) solution of oxirane (0.3 mmol) and ReBr(CO)5 (5 mol %) was stirred under an atmosphere of nitrogen at 80 °C for 1-5 h. After the reaction was complete, H2O was added to the reaction mixture and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried with MgSO4. The resulting mixture was filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated. Purification of the residue by silica gel column chromatography afforded carbonyl compounds. Further purification was carried out by recyclable preparative HPLC, if necessary. The structures of the products were assigned by their 1H and 13C-NMR, and mass spectra. The products were characterized by comparing their 1H and 13C-NMR spectra data with those of authentic sample or previous reports. Yields were determined by 1H-NMR using internal standard.
