A 300 ml four-necked flask equipped with a thermometer and stirrer was charged with 106.1 g (1.0 mol) of trimethyl orthoformate. While stirring, 0.3 g (0.002 mol) of anhydrous iron (III) chloride was added. While holding -15°C, 81.8 g (0.95 mol) of isopropyl vinyl ether was added over 5 hours, then the solution was aged for 2 hours. The weight percentage of the reaction solution at this stage was 178.7 g. The concentration of the desired 1,1,3,3-tetramethoxy-propane was 7.1% (production rate 7.7%).
