Chemical composition: contains gardeniside, hydroxyisogeniside, shanzhiside, gardenia new glycoside, gardenia glycoside, gardenia flavin, saffron, saffron acid, saffron methyl ester, etc.

Functions and indications: purging fire and removing vexation, clearing heat and diuresis, cooling blood and detoxifying. For fever upset, jaundice, red urine, blood strangulation and astringent pain, blood heat vomiting epistaxis, eye swelling and pain, fire poison sore, sprain.

Plant form: Evergreen shrub, up to 2m. Leaves opposite or whorled with 3 leaves, leaf blade leathery, oblong or obovate-lanceolate, 5-14cm long, 2-7cm wide, entire; stipules 2, usually connected to form a tube surrounding the branchlets. Flowers solitary on branch ends or leaf axils, white, fragrant; calyx green, cylindric; corolla dish-shaped, lobes 5 or more; ovary inferior. The flowering period is May to July, and the fruiting period is August to November.

It is cultivated in most parts of the country. Wild in all parts of the south, born on hillsides and roadsides. Distributed in Jiangxi, Hunan, Zhejiang, Fujian, Sichuan.

Harvesting: Harvest from September to November when the fruit is ripe and turns red and yellow

Characters: The fruit is oval or oblong, 1.5-3.5cm long and 1-1.5cm in diameter. The surface is reddish-yellow or brown-red, with 5-8 wing-like longitudinal ribs, 1 longitudinal vein between the two ribs, and a persistent calyx at the top. The peel is thin and brittle; the seeds are numerous, oblong, dark red or reddish-yellow. Gas slightly, slightly sour and bitter taste.

Taste: Cold in nature, bitter in taste.
