The Applications and preservation methods of hydrogenated castor oil
Jan 7,2025
Hydrogenated castor oil is a fine, almost white to pale yellow powder, practically insoluble in water, m.p. 83–88°C. It contains principally 12-hydroxystearic acid.
Properties
Hydrogenated castor oil is a hard, wax-like substance extracted from castor oil beans. There is also a petroleum-based formula of Hydrogenated Caster Oil known as PEG-40. The Hydrogenated Castor Oil chemical formula of this material is C57H110O9(CH2CH2O)n. Hydrogenation refers to a chemical process where an unsaturated compound is combined with hydrogen to produce saturation. In the case of HCO, this increases the oil’s stability and raises its melting point, transforming it into a solid at room temperature.
Applications
Hydrogenated castor oil is an important and popular ingredient for cosmetics makers because it has several beneficial properties for the skin and hair. One of the main benefits of Hydrogenated castor oil is its emollient properties, which help to moisturize and soften the skin. Other than that, its anti-inflammatory properties are believed to be very ?effective in soothing and calming irritated skin. Additionally, Hydrogenated castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid that is known to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
In cosmetics, Hydrogenated castor oil is often used as an emulsifier, which helps to combine oil and water-based ingredients in a formulation. It is also used as a thickening agent, which can give products such as creams and lotions a richer texture.
Preservation methods
Hydrogenated castor oil should be kept in a cool, dry location.
