Medical applications of sodium chloride
Dec 24,2024
Sodium chloride is a common inorganic salt compound that can be mixed with water to form a saline solution and is widely used in the medical field. It is known that 0.9% sodium chloride solution can be used to flush intravenous injections or catheters after administration; treat dehydration, replenish lost electrolytes; clean wounds, and is a solvent for other drugs. In addition, 23.4% sodium chloride injection can be used to replenish water and salt lost in the body due to certain conditions (e.g., hyponatremia or hyposalinity syndrome). It is also used as an additive to total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and carbohydrate-containing intravenous infusions.
100 cc 3% sodium chloride bolus for hyponatremic encephalopathy
Hyponatremic encephalopathy is a potentially lethal condition with numerous reports of death or permanent neurological injury. Studies have shown that the use of 100 cc 3% NaCl bolus is a safe, effective, and simple treatment for hyponatremic encephalopathy. This approach facilitates early and aggressive treatment, can be used equally effectively for mild or advanced symptomatic chronic or acute hyponatremia, and minimizes the risk of inadvertent overcorrection of hyponatremia. The most important measure to prevent hospital-acquired hyponatremia is to avoid the use of hypotonic fluids and to administer 0.9% NaCl to patients at high risk of AVP overdose when IV fluids are required.
20% Hypertonic Sodium Chloride Can Lead to Permanent Castration
The study found that 20% hypertonic chloride injection had the same effect of permanent castration in rats as bilateral orchiectomy. The change in serum sodium chloride did not reach lethal levels in rats. Therefore, this treatment has good potential as a novel and cost-effective method of castration with the added benefit of preserving both testes.
Increased stability of other drugs
Tropisetron hydrochloride injection and methylprednisolone sodium succinate injection are stable for up to 48 hours at 4°C and 25°C in 0.9% sodium chloride injection. Penicillin G for injection (2,500 and 50,000 units/mL) diluted in 0.9% sodium chloride injection or 5% dextrose injection and stored at 5°C in PVC containers or elastomeric pump containers is physically and chemically stable for at least 21 days.
