該基因編碼鳥嘌呤核苷酸結(jié)合蛋白（G蛋白）偶聯(lián)受體（GPCR）超家族的成員，該超家族又分為類別和亞型。受體是七通道跨膜蛋白，對細胞外信號作出反應并激活細胞內(nèi)信號轉(zhuǎn)導通路。這種蛋白是A2A亞型的腺苷受體，它使用腺苷作為首選的內(nèi)源性激動劑，并優(yōu)先與G（s）和G（olf）家族的G蛋白相互作用，以增加細胞內(nèi)cAMP水平。它在許多生物功能中起著重要作用，如心律和循環(huán)、腦和腎血流、免疫功能、疼痛調(diào)節(jié)和睡眠。它與炎癥性疾病和神經(jīng)退行性疾病等病理生理條件有關(guān)。選擇性剪接導致多種轉(zhuǎn)錄變體。已經(jīng)鑒定出一種由上游SPECC1L（具有calponin同源性和卷曲螺旋結(jié)構(gòu)域1-like的精子抗原）和ADORA2A（腺苷A2a受體）基因序列組成的通讀轉(zhuǎn)錄本，但人們認為它是非編碼的。
