It is commonly used as a chiral resolving agent, a precursor of the chiral auxiliary, and as a chiral solvating agent in NMR study. (1S,2S)-(-)-1,2-Diphenylethane-1,2-diamine is a versatile ligand for metal complexes formation, and is often used to sythesise chiral tropocoronands, which are used in asymmetric catalysis.
It is a co-catalyst in the Ru catalysed enantioselective hydrogenation of aromatic ketones.
