A portion of 4-fluorophenyl acetyl chloride (50.0 g, 290 mmol) was then added drop- wise over 30 min. Once the addition was complete, the reaction was allowed to warm to 25 C and then heated to 50 C for 8 hr. Subsequently, the reaction mixture was cooled to 25 C and poured onto ice (400 g). To the resulting suspension in ice was added 1.0 N HCI (50 mL). The organic layer was separated and washed with 10% HCI, saturated NaHC03 and brine. The organic layer was then dried and concentrated to afford a solid that was washed twice with hexane (200 mL) and then dried under vacuum to afford 2- (4-fluoro-phenyl)-1-phenyl-ethanone (59.90 g, 97%): MS (APCI+) : Sz 215.0 (M+H); H-NMR (CDCI3) o ?. 82 (d, 2 H), 7.54-7. 41 (m, 3 H), 7.22-7. 17 (m, 2 H), 7.00-6. 96 (m, 2 H), 4.23 (s, 3 H). |
