Periodic acid, also known as periodic acid, is the oxygenic acid of iodine (VII), which comes in two forms, with the chemical formula HIO4 and H5IO6. H+ and IO4? ions are present in dilute solutions of periodic acid. As the concentration rises, periodate begins to exist in the form of normal periodate H5IO6, which can be precipitated from the solution into crystals. The dehydration of regular periodate acid gives HIO4 meperiodate, further dehydration gives diiodide heptoxide (colorless viscous liquid), and the decomposition of iodine heptoxide gives diiodide pentoxide (I2O5) and oxygen. Orthoperiodate and metaperiodate can form salts, respectively, called "orthoperiodate" and "metaperiodate". The solubility and chemical properties of metaiodate are similar to those of halogenated perchlorates, but the anion radius is larger and the oxidation is weaker. In organic chemistry, periodic acid oxidizes o-diols and breaks the carbon-carbon bond to produce two aldehydes, which are used to determine the structure of sugars.

Production method

Method 1. The 6% hot KIO4 aqueous solution is passed through a column filled with KY-2(H-type) exchanger, heated, evaporated and concentrated until crystallization begins, then the sulfuric acid dryer is released, and the crystallization is extracted and then put into the dryer to dry.

Method 2. Infiltrate barium periodate with a small amount of water, add an excess of concentrated nitric acid (with a relative density of 1.42, no nitrogen oxides), heat it to 60 ~ 70 ℃, cool it, stir constantly, and let it fully react: After the reaction, it is cooled to 30 ~ 40℃, barium nitrate is filtered out and precipitated, washed with concentrated nitric acid and precipitated to no periodic acid, the wash and filtrate are combined, vaporized and concentrated under pressure (60 ~ 70℃), and left to rest after cooling, so that colorless periodic acid is completely crystallized, the filtered crystal is dried under pressure at 50℃, and the purity of periodic acid is 99.5% ~ 99.9%.

Use

1. Used as an analytical reagent, such as an oxidant. Thin layer chromatography for the detection of sugars.

2. Reagents for the photometric determination of phenylhydrazine.

3. Used as an oxidizing agent.
