Amphotericin B is a polyene antifungal agent that exerts its antifungal action by binding to sterols (ergosterol being the major component of fungal cell membranes) to form pores in the cell membrane, resulting in leakage of cellular contents. Amphotericin B is used to treat systemic infections caused by cryptococcus, coccidioidomycosis, candidiasis, mucormycosis, aspergillosis, and other fungi, and it also possesses antimicrobial activity against Leishmania species.

Liposomal Amphotericin B Injection is indicated for progressive and deep fungal infections caused by sensitive fungi, such as septicemia, endocarditis, meningitis (cryptococcal and other fungi), intra-abdominal infections (including those related to dialysis), pulmonary infections, urinary tract infections, and endophthalmitis.

Amphotericin B vaginal effervescent tablets are indicated for vaginal fungal infections.

Topical formulations are indicated for chromoblastomycosis, fungal infections of the skin following burns, respiratory tract infections due to Candida, Aspergillus or Cryptococcus, and fungal keratitis.
