Related reaction Benzaldehyde can be oxidized to a white solid benzoic acid with an unpleasant odor, which crystallizes on the inner wall of the container. Benzyl alcohol can be prepared by hydrogenating benzaldehyde, or it can be obtained by self-oxidation and reduction of benzaldehyde in an alcohol solution of potassium hydroxide (the products are potassium benzoate and benzyl alcohol). Benzaldehyde reacts with anhydrous sodium acetate and acetic anhydride to produce chemicalbook cinnamic acid. The alcohol solution of potassium cyanide can be used to catalyze the condensation of benzaldehyde to produce benzoin. Benzaldehyde undergoes disproportionation reaction (Cannizarro reaction, Cannizarro reaction) in a concentrated alkali solution: one molecule of aldehyde is reduced to the corresponding alcohol, and the other molecule of aldehyde is simultaneously oxidized to carboxylate. The speed of this reaction depends on the substituents on the aromatic ring.
