Cyclopentadiene, or cyclopentadiene, is a five-carbon cyclic diene with the formula C5H6. Cyclopentadiene is a colorless liquid at room temperature, has a strong pungent odor, and rapidly polymerizes to form dimeric cyclopentadiene through its own Diels-Alder reaction. Dipolymer cyclopentadiene is decomposed into cyclopentadiene by heating. Insoluble in water, soluble in ether, benzene and other solvents. Cyclopentadiene can be used as a dienophile to undergo diels-Alder reactions with para-benzoquinone and other dienophiles. Proton NMR spectroscopy shows that hydrogen [1,5] migrations occur continuously within the cyclopentadiene molecule, making the five ring carbon atoms identical. It is also for this reason that substituted cyclopentadiene, when DA reactions occur, usually results in a mixture of numerous isomer products. The carbon of cyclopentadienylene (C5H5-) is somewhat acidic, and the resulting anion has six π electrons and is aromatic. Cyclopentadiene and cyclopentadienyl negative ions can be coordinated with metal to form metallocene complexes. A typical example is ferrocene. Cyclopentadienyl (Cp). Cyclopentadiene is generally obtained from crude benzene, a byproduct of coking, or from the low-boiling part of petroleum pyrolysis.

Stability: Stable at room temperature. Incompatible with oxidizing agents,  acids and a wide variety of other compounds. May form peroxides in storage. May undergo spontaneous polymerisation.  Decomposes on heating. Highly flammable. Mixtures with air are explosive.

Storage conditions: the warehouse is ventilated and dry at low temperature, stored separately from oxidants and acids, and should not be stored for a long time to prevent polymerization.
