1-Methyl-2-pyridone is used in pharmaceutical industry. A common problem with hydrophobic non-natural base pairs?the inefficient extension following such a base pair?is reduced by using the methylpyridone scaffold, which simultaneously limits another frequent problem of non-natural bases: mispairs with deoxyadenosine.
