[step 2] To a suspension of 4-(4-chlorophenyl)tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-carbonitrile (2.6 g) obtained in the above-mentioned step 1 in water (50 ml) was added potassium hydroxide (3.3 g, 5.0 eq), and the mixture was heated under reflux for 5 hr. The reaction mixture was extracted with chloroform (100 ml×2). The organic layer was washed with saturated brine (50 ml), dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The obtained residue was crystallized from diisopropyl ether/hexane, and the crystals were collected by filtration to give the object product (2.0 g, yield 85%).
