Lissamine green is used for diagnosis of corneal damage and to
quantify tear production. These strips work by staining the cornea
blue upon instillation, resulting in a “speckling” of the cornea. This
speckling marks any corneal ulcerations as well as dry patches from
any muco-deficient or damaged corneal cells. A white or blue light
may be used on sthe slit lamp during detection. Lissamine green
possesses a therapeutic advantage in that it does not sting the eye
like Rose Bengal; however, as interpretation of lissamine green
results requires broader experience than that of Rose Bengal and
fluorescein, fluorescein staining is considered to be a more reliable
indicator of corneal damage. |
